Victory Over Violence Difference Maker – PATH

by Richard Atkinson | May 19th, 2017

Partners Against Trafficking Humans (PATH) is an organization that helps victims of human trafficking. Many people fail to realize that human trafficking is a ubiquitous issue not only overseas but here in Arkansas as well. Estimates show that between 100,000-300,000 children are trafficked in the US alone. PATH advocates in helping the victims by rescuing them, providing temporary housing, and assisting in recovery. With such a widespread issue PATH is a perfect choice for this month’s Difference Maker award.

The Difference Maker award is in conjunction with the Victory Over Violence campaign launched by KARK Channel 4 and Fox 16. Once a month, Rainwater, Holt & Sexton presents a $1,000 donation to an organization that is fighting violence in the community and has established themselves as a true Difference Maker. The partnership goal is to create a safer Central Arkansas by uniting community groups that are promoting change through improvements in education, jobs, mentoring, and hunger.

Spirit of Arkansas Winner – One Heart Playground

by Richard Atkinson | May 18th, 2017

The One Heart Playground in Burns Park is a fully inclusive playground designed for kids born with physical impairments. The project was inspired by Emma Wasson who was born with a congenital heart defect as well as Turner Syndrome. As her parents realized the need for a playground where Emma can play with other kids, they realized there was nowhere to go. They set out on a journey with the North Little Rock Parks and Recreation Department to raise the funds needed to build the playground. The community has rallied around the project, and construction on the project is in the progress. The playground should be ready for use soon, and donations will still be accepted for future expansion. The One Heart Playground is this month’s Spirit of Arkansas award winner for brightening the life of all the kids who will be able to play on it.

Rainwater, Holt & Sexton is partnered with KATV Channel 7 to present the “Spirit of Arkansas Award.” The award is given to local charities doing exceptional work in the community. To be considered for the Spirit of Arkansas Award, a charity can apply here.

The Rainwater, Holt and Sexton team on Thursday

At Rainwater, Holt & Sexton we pride ourselves on serving all of Arkansas. Yes, we mean geographically, and we have shown our commitment with offices in four locations in the state. That also means serving everyone who lives in Arkansas. Our firm spent the last few days working with the Mexican Consulate’s mobile consulate in Northwest Arkansas. The mobile consulate travels the state helping Mexicans in Arkansas with a variety needs. One need highly expressed was legal help, especially with Power of Attorney.  On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday our firm had 5 lawyers and 7 staff onsite to help answer legal questions and assist in creating Powers of Attorney for families. We also called on many other lawyers that are friends of the firm, of which many specialize in immigration and family law.

It’s an honor to work with the Mexican Consulate, which is the Mexican government’s representation in Arkansas. We don’t take the responsibility lightly and we are grateful for the trust they put in us. Through the work with the Mexican Consulate we have been able to build great relationships with consulate officers and build relationships with people we can help.  We also had an opportunity to speak with Univision reporter Karen Perez.

Victory Over Violence Difference Maker – Our Kids Program

by Richard Atkinson | April 24th, 2017

The Our Kids Program is dedicated to making a difference in the community by mentoring young men in middle through high school. The program uses African American police officers and other role models in the community to reach out, work with, and provide positive influences in the lives young African American men. Sgt. Willie Davis is the program coordinator and he and other volunteers try to be involved in every facet of their life. Not only do they provide something to do on Saturdays, but they also visit them at school and home in an effort to get to know and reach out to the kids. The work that Sgt. Davis and the rest of the men at the Our Kids Program are doing is why they are Difference Makers in the fight for Victory Over Violence.

The Difference Maker award is done in conjunction with the Victory Over Violence campaign launched by KARK Channel 4 and Fox 16. Once a month, Rainwater, Holt & Sexton will present a $1,000 donation to an organization that is fighting violence in the community and has established themselves as a true Difference Maker. The Other Side Ministries won this month’s vending machine charity. The Other Side works with people struggling with drug and alcohol addictions and helps them overcome those addictions using biblical principles. The program is a six month in-house residence program that incorporates community service and biblical teaching. The goal of the program is not just improving the life of those dealing with substance abuse, it’s also a way to improve families and communities that have been effected by addiction.

Our monthly charity giving is one of our favorite things to do. Each month employees nominate and vote on a charity in the community they would like to help. Throughout the month employees “donate” by buying snacks and drinks that the firm subsidizes. All the proceeds from the snacks are then matched by the firm. We are honored to have such great employees that not only pick out wonderful organizations, but also help by donating all month long.

RHS Attends ALS Walk

by Richard Atkinson | April 17th, 2017

ALS is a cause that is closely intertwined with our firm. When Stephen Holt was diagnosed with it in 2013 we quickly mobilized to do anything we could to help. One organization that we discovered was ALS Arkansas. They do fantastic work with ALS patients and their families. They not only provide equipment and expertise, but they also get to know the patients and their families and walk through the journey with them. They are hands on and strive to give support in any way possible to ALS patients all over Arkansas.

We were very excited to present ALS Arkansas with the Spirit of Arkansas award. We knew about the great work they do, and it was time all of Arkansas heard about their passion for people diagnosed with such a terrible disease.

We were happy to have over 50 people out for the check presentation at the annual ALS Walk. The walk, is held in April of every year and is the major fundraiser for ALS Arkansas. This year’s walk was the largest ever with over 750 people in attendance.

Spirit of Arkansas Winner – Partners Against Trafficking Humans

by Richard Atkinson | March 20th, 2017

Partners Against Trafficking Humans (PATH) embodies all we want in a Spirit of Arkansas winner. They truly see and meet a need that most people don’t realize happens inside our state. Many people believe human trafficking happens oversees, but estimates show between 100,000-300,000 children are trafficked in the US.  Often this is done by someone they know, or worse, a family member. PATH works to advocate on behalf of the victims, rescue people being trafficked, and assist in recovery.  As organizations like PATH bring awareness and action to the tragedy that is human trafficking, we support PATH to help those statistics work their way down to zero.  Rainwater, Holt & Sexton is pleased to present this month’s Spirit of Arkansas award to PATH.

Monthly Charity Winner – Orphan Door

by Richard Atkinson | March 9th, 2017

Orphan Door DonationThe February vending machine charity donation goes to a group working to help improve the life of orphans in Guatemala through a Conway fundraiser. The fundraiser is a fairy tale princess tea for kids and families that benefits The Orphan Door and the Eagle’s Nest International children’s home in Guatemala. Adoptions from other countries are not allowed in Guatemala, so many orphans will never be adopted, which leads to a financial burden on those trying to care for the children. We are glad this money will go to such a great group working with orphans in a country closed to adoption.

Our monthly charity giving is one of our favorite things to do. Each month employees nominate and vote on a charity in the community they would like to help. Throughout the month employees “donate” by buying snacks and drinks that the firm subsidizes. All the proceeds from the snacks are then matched by the firm. RHS Supports the ALS Walk

by Richard Atkinson | March 8th, 2017

ALS Walk Check

As part of our continuing commitment to honor the legacy of our late partner, Stephen Holt, Rainwater, Holt & Sexton is excited to give $5,000 to the ALS Walk. The walk is the biggest fundraising event of the year for ALS Association of Arkansas.

Stephen passed away on January 28, 2014 after being diagnosed with ALS the previous summer.  We saw firsthand the toll that ALS can take on someone’s body and Stephen fought hard to stop its progress. Ultimately there is no cure for ALS.  That is where great organizations like ALS Arkansas step in and provide care for patients and families that so desperately need it.  We quickly realized ALS Arkansas and Rainwater, Holt & Sexton will be forever linked.  It is an honor to continue Stephen’s legacy through supporting an organization that was with him every step of the way.

Each year a large team from RHS participates in the ALS Walk. It serves as a great opportunity to educate everyone about the disease and about the life the Stephen lived. We look forward to another great time at this year’s ALS Walk.

This year’s ALS Walk is on Saturday, April 8 with check in beginning at 9:30 and the walk starting at 10:30. If you would like to be involved or donate you can do so on the ALS Arkansas website.
