Man Killed by TV Antenna

In MONTICELLO, Ark. (AP) – Authorities say a man in southern Arkansas has died after a tall TV antenna fell on top of him as reported by Fox 16 News in Little Rock.

Monticello Police Lieutenant Carlos Garcia says the man, who has not been identified, was strapped to the antenna about 2 p.m. Thursday. He was trying to take a piece of it apart when it toppled into the yard and crushed him in a residential area of Monticello.

Garcia says the tower was between 75 and 150 feet high and that the man had climbed near the top when the antenna fell.

Police suspect the wind, combined with the weight of the man and the top-heavy tower, caused it to tumble.

Arkansas sand mining facility to pay $125K fine

From Fox 16 news: MOUNT PLEASANT, Ark. (AP) — A sand mining and processing facility near Mount Pleasant has agreed to pay a $125,000 fine for violations of the Arkansas Pollution Control Act.

The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality said Monday it’s signed a consent judgment decree with Bluebird Sand LLC in Izard County Circuit Court.

The agency says it discovered last November that a levee failed at one of Bluebird Sand’s wastewater holding ponds, allowing the wastewater to flow into a nearby creek. The ADEQ says on Dec. 5, another wastewater release from Bluebird’s facility into the creek resulted in a fish kill.

The ADEQ says Bluebird Sand didn’t have a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. Under the agreement, Bluebird Sand cannot use a settling basin for recycling of process water until such a permit is obtained.
